Moving the Pocket
Create easy yards for your offense with perimeter passing game
WHY MOVE THE POCKET
For a long time, I thought of sprint out passing as an easy way to throw smash or some sort of “Naked” Concept. When I first started coaching, we called our sprint out 68/69 Pro. It then turned into Jeep/Wrangler protection. We didn’t do much with it expect to create advantages for the QB throwing the ball or to help the OL block superior pass rushers.
Today, it has become a very productive way to get easy completions and increase the amount of concepts you can run with sprint out principles. We are trying to create a very highly efficient play call. How can we eliminate the pressure on the QB & the play caller? Pocket movers are a great answer to this question. This is even better with a mobile quarterback because if the concept isn’t there, he will more than likely get you positive yards on the ground.
I’ve found the best time to get the QB comfortable with the sprint out throwing mechanics is to really drill this during the summer. 7 on 7 is bull crap anyways. Why not work some things you never get the chance to? I should probably write an article explaining my feelings on 7 on 7. Some coaches are incredibly addicted to one of the poorest forms of practicing the game of football. Bad habits, false pictures, poor recreation of game environment, etc. So when you guys travel for 7 on 7 tournaments this year, just work your sprint out game. Even if it’s just to piss everyone off.
Sorry for that rant. Back to the topic.
Below I am going to show some of my favorite designs from over the past few years. Many of them include the “Dash” design which has really caught fire over the past few seasons. I hope this sparks your ideas and can help provide a more efficient passing game. Not only can you get creative with this style of play, but it can be a safety net you call when you feel stuck as a play caller. I know a lot of coaches that use the sprint out during their 2 minute drill and have had great success! No matter how you plan on implementing it, I think it really is worth at least looking into.
Let’s dive into the tape:
FYI- Get ready to see quite a bit of throw back film. A lot of really good teams ran successful sprint out schemes. Again, built for efficacy and to create success in your offense. Have your notebook ready.
